Class 5

Miss Sculthorpe

Welcome to Class 5

In September, we will be learning about our Theme topic on World War II. We will explore the countries involved in the conflict, the key leaders of the Allied and Axis powers, and locate these countries on a map of Europe. The children will learn about the causes of the war, the impact of the Blitz on Britain, and what daily life was like for children and families during wartime. As part of our learning, we will also begin to develop an age-appropriate understanding of the Holocaust, exploring why it happened and why it is important that we remember this period in history. In English, we will be writing a letter linked to our World War II topic. The children will use a range of writing features to create an effective and engaging piece of writing, while continuing to develop their spelling, punctuation and grammar skills. Our maths topics this term will cover place value and the four formal operations, as well as continuing to develop and improve our arithmetic skills.

In Science, we will be focusing on the topic, Forces. The children will investigate the effects of gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, and explore how these forces act on objects. They will also learn about mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, and investigate how they allow a smaller force to have a greater effect. Through a range of practical investigations, the children will make predictions, record results and use evidence to explain their findings.

PE will be on Fridays this half term. Children should come to school wearing their full school PE kit: a plain white T-shirt, plain navy blue or black shorts, jogging bottoms or leggings, and trainers. Please ensure long hair is tied back and earrings are removed or covered with tape for safety.
